Valley of the Moon Aquatics
After 18 years of teaching swimming in Sonoma Valley, it’s still the little moments that make the biggest difference.
The moment when a 14-year-old Latino boy, taller than me, arrives at the pool gate saying he doesn't know how to swim but wants to learn. His little sister is learning to swim at Valley of the Moon Aquatics and he has decided he too is going to swim. After several weeks of lessons, this young person, more man than child, has conquered his fear of water, he’s blowing bubbles, rolling over and floating, then swimming 25 yards of freestyle; he’s water-safe.
While he may never be a beautiful swimmer or an Olympian he will be able to save himself in the water. By jumping into that pool, he has conquered a cultural stigma and social obstacles. Maybe after a few more summers with Valley of the Moon Aquatics, if I’m lucky, he’ll come back as a coach and help me teach the next generation of Sonoma’s children how to swim.
