Susan Woessner, Director of Safe Sport
In her role as Director of Safe Sport, Susan is responsible for the oversight of all aspects of USA Swimming’s athlete protection policies, guidelines, educational programs, reporting and adjudication services, and other activities and functions related to USA Swimming’s efforts to foster safe, healthy and positive sport environments. She became the Director of Safe Sport in September of 2010.
Susan has worked with USA Swimming since 2004, in both the Business Operations and National Team divisions. She received a Master’s Degree in Social Work from the University of Texas and has experience working in the field with Girls, Inc., the Girls’ Empowerment Network of Austin and Southwest Key Programs.
Susan counts empowering young people among her passions. She also volunteers as a court appointed special advocate for CASA of the Pikes Peak Region and as a confidential victim advocate for TESSA of Colorado Springs.
From 1998-2002, Susan swam competitively for Indiana University. There she was awarded the Indiana University Scholastic Achievement Award, the IU Anita Aldrich Leadership Award and the IU Athletic Department Aline A. Robinson Mental Attitude Award.

Liz Hoendervoogt, Safe Sport Coordinator
Liz Hoendervoogt joined the USA Swimming staff as Safe Sport Coordinator in November of 2011.
In Liz's role, she provides administrative and program support for USA Swimming’s Safe Sport program.
She joins the NGB from the El Paso County Department of Human Services where she served as a caseworker in the Child Welfare Division’s sexual abuse unit. Hoendervoogt also brings experience with Safe Passage, a child advocacy center in Colorado Springs and Harrison School District 2, also in Colorado Springs.
Liz works alongside USA Swimming Safe Sport Director Susan Woessner to oversee and best execute the organization’s athlete protection programming.

Maggie Vail, Safe Sport Education Specialist
Maggie Vail joined USA Swimming as the Safe Sport Education Specialist last September. Her primary responsibility is to focus on Safe Sport’s education and prevention efforts by developing new resources for members.
Ms. Vail earned a Master of Social Work degree from the University of Michigan and previously worked as a victim advocate and counselor for survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence.
