USA Swimming announces WUG Team roster
NCAA Champions Austin Surhoff (Cockeysville, Md.) and Tom Shields (Huntington Beach, Calif.) will headline a field of 47 swimmers that will represent Team USA at the 2011 World University Games in Shenzhen, China. The swimming competition will take place Aug. 14-19, while the Games will run from Aug. 12-23.
The 2011 U.S. Team is nearly double the size of the 2009 roster and features 2010 Pan Pacific Championship team members Annie Chandler (San Antonio, Texas), Michael Klueh (Evansville, Ind.), Elliot Keefer (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Tim Phillips (Vienna, W.Va.). Open water standouts Sean Ryan (Chattanooga, Tenn.), Haley Anderson (Granite Bay, Calif.) and Andrew Gemmell (Wilmington, Del.) will also compete in China as will 2009 World University Games gold medalist Chelsea Nauta (Tampa, Fla.), and silver medalists Lyndsay De Paul (Orange, Calif.), and Bobby Bollier (Mission Hills, Kan.). The head coach for the men will be Rich DeSelm (University of North Carolina), while Eric Hansen (University of Wisconsin) will lead the women’s team.
Taking place every two years, the World University Games are an international multi-sport event organized for university athletes by the International Sports Federation (FISU). Swimmers on the 2011 World University Games Team roster were selected based upon their performance at the 2010 ConocoPhillips National Championships. All athletes selected for the team must be at least 17 years old and less than 28 years old on January 1, 2011.
- Selected athletes may not participate in the 2011 World Championships
- Highest-place eligible finisher in each Olympic event were selected, plus the top four finishers in 100m and 200m free
- Second-highest place finishers, other than the 100m and 200m Free, will be added based on doubles and world rankings
