The World Championships in the year following the Olympics always seems like a fresh start. It’s a new beginning to a new Olympiad. While 2012’s legendary Olympic feats are still fresh (e.g., Phelpsian heroics, Katie Ledecky’s legendary 800m, Missy Franklin’s epic double-double), swimmers, fans, and coaches are excited for swimming’s new chapter to begin. Swimming through Diabetes
While other people were busy preparing candlelight dinners and popping “the question” on Valentine’s Day 2012, Elijah Spiro was experiencing his own life-changing event. Just 15 at the time, he had contracted viral pneumonia but continued swimming through his high school practices and meets feeling sick – and quickly became sicker and sicker with a thick cough, fatigue and weight loss.
The 2013 10K and 5K Open Water National Championships were held May 17 and 19 at Lower Castaic Lake in Santa Clarita, Calif. Here’s a look back at the action.

Turning on Your Offseason
Ah, the off-season; A bittersweet time for us swimmers. We look forward to getting a break all year (Saturday mornings to sleep in!?), but when it actually comes time to stay dry for two or three weeks, we find ourselves antsy. We fear the progress we have made as athletes during the other 49 weeks of the year will be lost, or that we may fall behind if we take a break.
