Anderson, Leverenz win on first night of NCAAs
The 2013 NCAA Women’s Division I Swimming and Diving Championships will be held March 21-23 at the Indiana University Natatorium in Indianapolis. A number of U.S. Olympians and National Teamers will be competing in this meet.
On the first night of competition, Olympic medalists Haley Anderson of the University of Southern California and Caitlin Leverenz of the University of California both won individual events. Anderson took the 500-yard freestyle in 4:34.66, while Leverenz won the 200y IM in 1:53.39.
Other Olympians and National Teamers swimming in the finals of individual events Thursday night included: Olympic gold medalist Shannon Vreeland of the University of Georgia (3rd, 500y free, 4:35.95), Bonnie Brandon of the University of Arizona (4th, 500y free, 4:35.96), Olympic gold medalist Allison Schmitt of Georgia (6th, 500y free, 4:36.73), Elizabeth Pelton of Cal (2nd, 200y IM, 1:53.82), Maya DiRado of Stanford (3rd, 200y IM, 1:53.86), Olympic silver medalist Elizabeth Beisel of the University of Florida (5th, 200 IM, 1:54.65), Margo Geer of Arizona (1st, 50y free, 21.73), and Megan Romano of Georgia (2nd, 50 free, 21.88).
Georgia leads after the first day with 163 points, followed closely by Tennessee with 150.5 points and Arizona with 127 points.
