Nation’s Capital Swim Club and Purdue University Win Relays on Opening Night of Toyota U.S. Open

2024 US Open - Nation's Capital Relay

Nation’s Capital Swim Club (NCAP) won both women’s relays and Purdue University (Purdue) won both men’s relays on opening night of Toyota U.S. Open. For the first time since 2017, athletes are racing short course yards instead of long course meters at the championship meet inside the Greensboro Aquatic Center. Racing will continue through Saturday evening, with prelims starting at 9 a.m. ET and finals at 6 p.m. ET each day.

Women’s 200y Medley Relay – FINAL

1 – Nation’s Capital Swim Club, 1:41.53

2 – Queens University, 1:41.77

3 – Fresno State Swimming, 1:42.07

NCAP coach Pete Morgan on the relay swimmers: “It was an early opportunity for our best four to get on a relay together. I thought all our takeoffs were pretty strong.”

Men’s 200y Medley Relay – FINAL

1 – Purdue University, 1:26.69

2 – Loyola University Maryland – A, 1:27.54

3 – Loyola University Maryland – B, 1:28.07

Purdue head coach Alex Jerden on the relay: “We wanted to execute the race the best we could, and really, we are here to have fun. That was our number one game plan. We just wanted to go out there, swim fast, and have fun. It set the tone for our 800 free relay, which I was also really excited about.”

Women’s 800y Freestyle Relay– FINAL

1 – Nation’s Capital Swim Club, 7:23.62

Morgan on the athletes competing at this point in the season: “Recognizing that the girls came from two separate sites tonight, I would say the training is going really well (at both sites). We are excited to see where things go from this meet and into our invite next weekend.”

Men’s 800y Freestyle Relay– FINAL

1 – Purdue University, 6:26.46

2 – University of Utah, 6:30.99

3 – Nation’s Capital Swim Club, 6:37.46

Jerden on the relay time: “The biggest thing for us, is our school record is not too far off of that (time). We wanted a good sign, at least at this point in the season, that the school record could go down. I think we know where that is going, so that’s pretty fun and exciting.”

Competition continues through Saturday with tomorrow’s action featuring the women’s and men’s 500y freestyle, 200y individual medley, 50y freestyle, and 400y medley relay. Meet information and the complete competition schedule can be found here.
