by USA Swimming
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – USA Swimming today announced the 115 members of the 2017-18 National Team, which honors the nation’s top swimmers for their performances this year.

“USA Swimming enjoyed outstanding performances across the board this summer at the FINA World Championships, World University Games and domestically,” said Frank Busch, USA Swimming National Team Director. “It was a tremendous first year of the Olympic quad for Team USA swimmers, and these athletes will look to build on these successes as they approach the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.”
The United States won a record 38 medals in the pool competition – and added three more medals open water events – at the 2017 FINA World Championships in Hungary. Just last week, American athletes earned 28 medals at the World University Games in Taipei and 32 medals at the FINA World Junior Championships in Indianapolis.

Among the headliners of the 2017-18 USA Swimming National Team are Katie Ledecky (Bethesda, Md./Stanford Swimming/NCAP) and Caeleb Dressel (Green Cove Springs, Fla./Bolles School Sharks/Florida), who earned National Team status in five and four events each, respectively. Ledecky ranks as the top American in the women’s 200-, 400-, 800- and 1500-meter freestyle events, while Dressel was tops in the men’s 50m free, 100m free and 100m fly.
At the 2017 FINA World Championships, Ledecky won six medals – five gold – and claimed her third straight world titles in the 400m, 800m and 1500m freestyle events. She added gold in the 400m and 800m free relays, as well as a second-straight world championships medal (silver) in the 200m free.
Dressel, meanwhile, won seven gold medals to join Michael Phelps as the only swimmers to earn seven titles at a single FINA World Championships. He won individual gold and set American records in the 50m free, 100m free and 100m fly.
World championships medalist and Olympian Leah Smith (Pittsburgh, Pa./Cavalier Swimming) joins Ledecky as the only other swimmer to earn National Team status in five events. Mallory Comerford (Kalamazoo, Mich./University of Louisville), Dressel, Ledecky and Smith were the only swimmers to qualify in four or more events.
Leading the 12-member Open Water National Team are individual FINA World Championships medalists Ashley Twichell (Fayetteville, N.Y./North Carolina Aquatic Club) and Jordan Wilimovsky (Malibu, Calif./Team Santa Monica/Northwestern), who earned 5-kilometer gold and 10K silver, respectively, this summer at Lake Balaton, Hungary. Twichell also earned National Team honors in the women’s 800m and 1500m free.
