The United States won three more medals – two gold and a silver – Thursday at the 7^th FINA World Junior Championships in Budapest Hungary.

After three days of competition, that brings the Americans’ total medal tally to 16 – eight gold, four silver and four bronze.

Gretchen Walsh led the way for the U.S. Thursday, finishing 1-2 win the women’s 100m freestyle with teammate Torri Huske in 53.74 and 54.54, respectively.

“I wasn’t even expecting to break 54 [seconds] by that much, so I was really excited and happy with it,” Walsh said. “I definitely knew I had it in me. There was just so much energy and talent in the heats, so I fed off of that. I went out as fast as I could and tried to hold everyone off in the end, and I was really happy when I saw my time.”

Walsh later returned to the pool for gold in the mixed 400m free relay. She and teammates Luca Urlando, Adam Chaney and Amy Tang set the world Junior record in that event in 3:25.92.

“It was definitely a hard double, but it was so worth it,” Walsh said. “I know winning a gold individually is incredible, but getting a world junior record and winning a gold with other members on the USA team is just awesome and having that honor is amazing. It was a really great experience and I didn’t even know we were going to break the world junior record, but once I heard it, I was like ‘USA, we rule,’ so it was a great experience.”

It was the third gold medal of the meet for both Walsh and Urlando. In addition to the two she won tonight, Walsh also won gold last night in the mixed 400m medley relay.

Urlando won gold in last night’s 200m free and in the men’s 400m free relay on the first night of competition.

Other Americans swimming in Thursday night’s finals were Natalie Mannion who finished sixth in the women’s 200m back in 2:12.26, Blake Manoff, who finished sixth in the men’s 100m fly in 52.49; Jake Mitchell, who finished seventh in the men’s 800m free in 7:54.70; and Arik Katz, who finished eighth in the men’s 800m free in 7:57.23.
