2016 Speedo Winter Junior Championships: Day 3 Recap

It was more exciting action for night 3 of Winter Junior Championships-East and West. Tonight’s schedule was packed with events:  the 400 IM, 100 Fly, 200 Free, 100 Breast, 100 Back and 200 Free Relay.

Brooke Forde of the Lakeside Swim Team had a stunning performance in the 400 IM to take the gold in the East. Her time of a 4:02.51 was almost ten seconds ahead of anyone in the field in the East or the West. Gabrielle Kopenski from Texas Ford Aquatics took her second win in the West in 4:11.50.

Reece Whitley, who won the 200 IM last night in the East, was back on the top of the podium again for the 400 IM with a 3:47.15. In the West, Alex Liang had clear control of the race, touching the wall over two seconds ahead of his nearest competitor in a 3:46.75.

For the ladies of the West, it took a 51 to score the top two spots in the 100 Fly. Regan Smith from Riptide Swim Club got her hand on the wall first in 51.73 with Eva Merrell of the Aquazot Swim Club right behind her in 51.93. Isabel Ivey of the Gators Swim Club went a 52.61 to edge out Olivia Carter (52.65) at Juniors-East.

In the men’s 100 fly, Ryan Hoffer of Scottsdale Aquatic Club proved again that he’s the fastest in all the land by going a 45.47--A time that was over a second faster than his nearest competitor. Later in the evening, Hoffer scored yet another win in the 100 Back in 46.27.

Isabel Ivey, only minutes off her win in the 100 Fly was able to pull the impressive double to swim to victory in the girls 200 Free (1:43.64). Morgan Tankersley, who had a win in the 500 last night earned the silver in 1:44.39.

The boy’s 200 Free marked Drew Kibler’s 3rd win of Juniors-East. John Walker from SwimMAC Carolina dropped a huge time of 1:33.73, but Drew was able to hold him off to grab the gold in 1:33.40.

It was a record breaking performance for Alex Walsh in the girls 100 Breaststroke. Alex broke the 15-16 NAG record in 58.80, swimming a second and a half faster than her nearest competitor. Alex Walsh was able to come right off her 100 Breast victory to win the 100 back only minutes after in a 52.32.

In the West, Zoe Bartel was the only swimmer to go under a minute in the 100 Breast and she nearly broke 59 with her 59.04. In the boys 100 Breast, Reece Whitley scored his third individual victory of the meet by winning the 100 breast by over a second in 52.95.

Regan Smith crushed the 13-14 NAG record in the 100 Back in 51.09 for her second win of the night in Texas Station.

In the Men’s 200 Free Relay, Scottsdale Aquatic Club completed their sweep of the relays in the West to go 1:19.29. Standout Ryan Hoffer anchored the relay in 18.76. Bolles School scored another win in the East going 1:20.44.

For the Ladies 200 Free Relay, the Fort Collins Area Swim Team came out on top again in the West in 1:32.01 and the Gators Swim Club won the East in 3:23.46.
