After leaving last week's Toyota U.S. Open with National Age Group records in four events, Thomas Heilman broke two more 13-14 national age group records this evening at the 2021 Speedo Winter Junior Championships. Meanwhile, Katie Grimes, Maximus Williamson and Bella Sims added meet records of their own during the third night of racing at the Speedo Winter Junior Championships in Greensboro, N.C. and Austin, Texas.
Sandpipers of Nevada's Katie Grimes, who has already posted several fast swims this week, got the night off to a rousing start at the West championships.
In the women's 400-yard I.M., she destroyed Ella Eastin's Juniors west meet record of 4:05.25 and the overall Juniors record of 4:02.51, owned by Brooke Forde. Grimes' 4:00.66 was six seconds better than second-place finisher Justina Kozan and just missed Dagny Knutson's 2008 national age group record by a mere .04.
Another Juniors record went down in the men's 400y I.M., with North Texas Nadadores' Maximus Williamson clocking in at 3:42.22 to erase Curtis Ogren's 2013 mark of 3:44.26 from the record books. Williamson will have a couple more years to chase Carson Foster's overall Juniors record of 3:38.65 from 2019.
Bella Sims of Sandpipers of Nevada collected her second individual win of the meet in the women's 100y fly, stopping the clock at 52.21 to top Fort Collins Area Swim Team's Lucy Bell (52.65). Sandpipers swept the fly events as Sims' teammate, Ilya Kharun, won the men's race in 45.59, just off Ryan Hoffer's matching Juniors meet records of 45.46.
Sims returned to the top of the podium in the women's 200y free, out-racing a talented field and posting a new Juniors west and overall meet record of 1:42.92 for the win. That lowered Regan Smith's 1:43.27 from 2018.
In other finals action, iNspire Swim Team’s Nate Germonprez won the men’s 200y free in 1:34.19. Denver Hilltoppers’ Emma Weber (59.03) and Bellevue Club Swim Team’s Charlie Arnold (53.22) were victorious in the 100 breaststroke events, while Phoenix Swim Club’s Kennedy Noble (52.62) and Lake Oswego’s Nick Simons (46.39) touched first in the 100y back events.
Sandpipers of Nevada continued their domination of the women’s meet with a win in the 200y free relay, thanks to Sims (22.74), Grimes (23.01), Audrey Yu (22.71) and Claire Weinstein (22.64) and their combined 1:31.10. Rose Bowl’s Rex Maurer (20.35), Ronald Dalmacio (19.94), Zach Larrick (20.26) and Nathan Kim (20.15) posted a 1:20.71 to win the men’s 200 free relay and extend their lead in the men’s team standings.
No Juniors meet records fell at the East championships in Greensboro, but there were plenty of fireworks thanks to 14-year-old Thomas Heilman of Cavalier Aquatics.
Heilman, who has already set a couple of national age group records recently, took down another tonight with a 45.81 in the men’s 100y fly. He lowered his own record of 46.42 which he set this morning in prelims, and won the event over Mason Manta Rays’ Carl Bloebaum, who swam a 46.06 for second.
In the very next event, Heilman was at it again, this time posting a 1:34.68 to again lower his 13-14 National Age Group record from this morning’s prelims, a 1:35.28. Heilman finished second in the race to YMCA of Cumberland’s Daniel Diehl, who posted a 1:33.68.
SwimMAC Carolina’s Baylor Nelson swept the men’s I.M. events, clocking a 3:42.78 in the 400y I.M. tonight to add to his record-setting 200y I.M. from last night. Carmel’s Alex Shackell, who has already been in the top three a few times this meet in relays and individual events, got her first win of the week with a 51.21 in the women’s 100y fly, just missing Claire Curzan’s meet record of 50.87 from 2019. Shackell’s teammates, Devon Kitchel (100 breast, 1:00.53) and Berit Berglund (100 back, 51.32), also added their own wins on night three.
Other night three winners included Chattahoochee Gold’s Elizabeth Tilt (women’s 400y I.M., 4:12.01), Anna Moesch (women’s 200y free, 1:45.87), Lakeside’s Will Scholtz (men’s 100y breast, 53.67) and Zionsville’s Will Modglin (men’s 100y back, 45.90).
Carmel’s Meghan Christman (23.08), Gretchen Lueking (23.13), Devon Kitchel (22.57) and Alex Shackell (22.00) topped the women’s 200y free relay in 1:30.78, while Bolles School’s Andres Dupont Cabrera (20.18), Drew Salls (19.63), Tucker Peterson (20.35) and Will Heck (20.18) topped the men’s relay in 1:20.34. Carmel has won all four of the women’s relays thus far in the meet.
