Two regional competitions of the 2022 Speedo Winter Junior Championships were held earlier this month at the Greensboro Aquatic Center (East) and the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center (West). Hundreds of the nation’s top emerging athletes showcased their speed as National Age Group (NAG) and meet records fell in both locations throughout the event.
Charlotte Crush | Girls 100y Backstroke | 13-14 NAG Record
Crush (Lakeside Swim Team) took down the 13-14 girl’s 100y backstroke record with a clocking of 51.01, nearly breaking the :51 barrier. Crush took home gold at the East meet.
Kaii Winkler | Boys' 100y Freestyle | 15-16 NAG Record
Winkler (Eagle Aquatics) threw down a 42.21 in prelims to break an eight-year-old record in the Men’s 100y freestyle event at the East location. He went on to capture gold in the final with a time of 42.22.
Katie Grimes | Girls 400y Individual Medley | 15-16 NAG Record
Grimes (Sandpipers of Nevada), a Tokyo Olympian, took down another NAG record by going 3:57.02 to win gold in the 400y individual medley. Her performance was also a pool record and the short-course junior meet record.
Maximus Williamson | Boys' 100y Freestyle, 200y Freestyle, 200y Individual Medley, 400y Individual Medley | 15-16 NAG Record
Williamson (Lakeside Aquatic Club) broke four individual NAG records at the Speedo Junior Championships (West). He swam the 100y freestyle in 42.61, which would have been the new record if not for East swimmer Winkler’s prelim swim earlier that day. His leadoff swim of 1:33.07 in the boy’s 4x200y freestyle relay took down Tokyo Olympian Drew Kibler’s seven-year-old record. In the 200y individual medley, he swam 1:42.07 to claim both NAG and Speedo Junior West records. Lastly, and what might be the most impressive record, Williamson broke swimming legend Michael Phelps’ 400y individual medley NAG record by almost three seconds. His time of 3:39.83 ended the reign of a 20-year NAG record in addition to claiming the Speedo Junior Championship (West) event record. Williamson claimed gold in all four of these individual events in the West.
Thomas Heilman | Boys' 100y Butterfly, 200y Butterfly, 200y Individual Medley | 15-16 NAG Record
Heilman (Cavalier Aquatics) took down three NAG records at the East meet. The 100y and 200y butterfly times both broke four-year-old records set by Luca Urlando. The 100y butterfly was broken by over a second, going 44.67, and he claimed the 200y butterfly record with a 1:40.86. Heilman’s 200y individual medley time of 1:41.71 broke Williamson’s NAG record, set earlier in the evening at the West meet. In addition to setting NAG records in these three events, he won gold in all three events.
