TYR Pro Swim Series Opens with 1500m in Fort Lauderdale


Katie Grimes Race Start - 2022 World Cup



Competition at the 2023 TYR Pro Swim Series Fort Lauderdale opened with the 1500m freestyle on Wednesday night. The event runs through Saturday at the Fort Lauderdale Aquatic Center. 

The Sandpipers of Nevada trio of Katie Grimes, Bella Sims and Claire Weinstein swept the podium on the women’s side. Grimes won in a time of 15:56.27, good for fifth all-time in her age group. Sims was second with a 16:19.29 and Weinstein rounded out the top three with a time of 16:26.50. 

“(This) feels pretty good,” Grimes said. “We knew where we wanted to be right now, and we just wanted to be better than where we were in January in Knoxville. I’m pretty happy with that (effort) right now at this point in the season.” 

Ahmed Hafnaoui (TUN) won the men’s race in 15:00.24. Marwan El Kamash (EGY) finished second with a 15:01.26. American record holder and 2020 Olympic gold medalist Bobby Finke finished third with a 15:02.54. 

The TYR Pro Swim Series Fort Lauderdale will continue Thursday, March 2 with prelims at 9 a.m. ET and finals at 6 p.m.
