Top American Talents Take Stage for World Aquatics Open Water Championships

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Five of the nation’s best open water swimmers will represent the U.S. at the 2023 World Aquatics Open Water Championships in Fukuoka, Japan. Open water programming kicks off tonight at 7 p.m. ET in the United States (Saturday morning in Japan) with the women’s 10K and concludes July 19 with the mixed 4x1500m-meter relay. 

The 10K events carry significant qualification implications, as the medalists in both the men’s and women’s races automatically qualify to swim the 10K at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games. Additionally, the top-eight finishers in the Fukuoka 10K will qualify for the 2024  World Aquatics Open Water Championships in Doha, Qatar, which also provides qualifying opportunities for the Paris Olympics. 

The women’s 10K will feature Katie Grimes (Las Vegas, Nev./Sandpipers of Nevada) and Mariah Denigan (Walton, Ky./Indiana University). Grimes finished fifth at the 2022 World Championships Open Water 10K, which stands as the second-highest finish by an American in competition history. 

The men’s 10K is scheduled for Saturday, July 15 at 7 p.m. ET, with  Brennan Gravley (Las Vegas, Nev./University of Florida) and Joey Tepper (Egg Harbor Township, N.J./University of Tennessee) representing the U.S. Gravley’s swim marks his thirdconsecutive appearance at the World Open Water Championships. 

The women’s and men’s 10K races will be broadcasted live on Peacock at 7 p.m. ET today (women’s 10K) and Saturday (men’s 10K). 

The 5K races are scheduled for Monday, July 17, with the women’s race beginning at 7 p.m. ET, followed by the men’s raceat 9 p.m. ET. Grimes and Denigan will once again compete in the women’s race, while Brennan Gravley will swim alongside his younger brother, Dylan Gravley (Las Vegas, Nev./Arizona State University), in the men’s race. 

Rounding out the competition is the mixed 4x1500m-meter freestyle relay, scheduled for Wednesday, July 19 at 7 p.m. ET. The U.S. last medaled in the event in 2019, with the team of Haley Anderson, Michael Brinegar, Ashley Twichell and Jordan Wilimovsky securing a bronze.
