FUKUOKA, Japan – Kate Douglass (Pelham, N.Y./New York Athletic Club) earned USA Swimming its first gold medal of the competition on Monday night at the 2023 World Aquatics Championships (Marine Messe Arena).

U.S. athletes collected four medals – one gold, two silver and one bronze – on the second night of finals, bringing the total to eight medals after four competition sessions (1g, 5s, 2b). Luke Hobson made his World Championships (LCM) debut on Monday.

Men’s 100m Breaststroke – FINAL
T-SILVER – Nic Fink (Morristown, N.J./Metro Atlantic Aquatic Club), 58.72

Seventh – Josh Matheny (Pittsburgh, Pa./Indiana Swim Club/Indiana University), 59.45

Fink on the final results: “A three-way tie for second is certainly unprecedented. To celebrate on a podium with more than three people, I'm happy about that. (Posting official results) is a slow process. I looked at my name and I see it, and then I see everyone else's reaction and I'm like, ‘wait what's happening?’ I see I actually tied Arno (Kamminga) for second. That's great. And Nicolò (Martinenghi) is also celebrating. I'm like, wait a minute ‘1, 2, 3’? Oh, he's also second, too. Those guys are great and the fact that we're all going the same time here shows how close the competition really is in breaststroke.”

Women’s 100m Butterfly – FINAL
BRONZE – Torri Huske (Arlington, Va./Arlington Aquatic Club), 56.61

Eighth – Gretchen Walsh (Nashville, Tenn./Nashville Aquatic Club/University of Virginia), 57.58

Huske on her performance: “I was super excited to race. This is an amazing field, and I’m very grateful that I got on the podium. (Finishing) third is a really big deal especially after I got touched out in Tokyo.”

Women’s 200m Individual Medley – FINAL
GOLD – Kate Douglass (Pelham, N.Y./New York Athletic Club), 2:07.17
SILVER – Alex Walsh (Nashville, Tenn./Nashville Aquatic Club/University of Virginia), 2:07.97

Douglass on her performance: “I am really happy about that race. I really just wanted to get the gold for Team USA tonight and I am so happy that I did that. I think this year I just tried to conserve a little bit more energy in the prelims, and I think I did a great job with that. I was ready to race tonight.”

Walsh on her performance: “I know my strength is my middle 100. I wanted to have good splits there and then race on that last 50. I am happy with my execution, and I hope this will motivate me to have a good year heading into Paris. I know exactly how Kate (Douglass) and all the other girls swim that race, so I knew I just had to battle it. Obviously, I wasn't where I was last year but there is a lot to learn after that. I'm happy with my swim.”
