Team USA Claims 11 More Medals at the Pan American Games

SANTIAGO, Chile – Team USA picked up five gold medals on day three of the 2023 Pan American Games swimming competition in Santiago, Chile. U.S. swimmers also claimed two podium positions at the Centro Acuático del Estadio Nacional three times tonight, bringing today’s medal finishes to 11 (5g, 4s, 2b).   

Today’s swims bring Team USA’s medal total to 32 medals (13g, 4s, 8b) – 15 more than any other nation. View the swimming medal table by nation here.  

More than 350 athletes from 41 federations are competing over the five days of pool competition – the most athletes competing in a sport at the Pan American Games. 

Women’s 100m Freestyle 
3 – Catie DeLoof (Grosse Pointe, Mich./New York Athletic Club), 54.50 
5 – Amy Fulmer (Bellefontaine, Ohio/The Ohio State University), 54.90 

DeLoof on winning bronze: “I’m super excited. I’m also excited to share the podium with two other Michigan teammates. I feel like it’s just an honor and shows the history of Michigan swimming.” 

Men’s 100m Freestyle 
2 – Brooks Curry (Atlanta, Ga./Dynamo Swim Club), 48.38 
2 – Jonny Kulow (Lander, Wy./Sun Devil Swimming), 48.38 

Curry on his performance: “I thought it was good. It hurt a lot. Great to tie with this guy and be up on the podium together, that’s always fun. Think I executed well and improved from the morning, so I’ll take that.” 

Kulow on sharing the podium: “I mean it’s pretty fun, especially when it’s someone from your own country. I definitely look up to Brooks [Curry], he’s always been a role model for me. It’s super fun and it’s been fun to put on a show here.” 

Race Notes: 

  • USA teammates Curry and Kulow tied for silver with identical splits (23.10, 25.28). 

  • Kulow’s time is a new personal best. 

Women’s 200m Breaststroke 
6 – Anna Keating (Alexandria, Va./Cavalier Aquatics/Piedmont Family YMCA), 2:31.01 
7 – Emma Weber (Boulder, Colo./Cavalier Aquatics/Piedmont Family YMCA), 2:31.14 

Men’s 200m Breaststroke 
1 – Jake Foster (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mason Manta Rays/University of Texas), 2:10.71 
5 – Noah Nichols (Midlothian, Va./Cavalier Aquatics/Piedmont Family YMCA), 2:14.23 

Foster on his performance: “I would have loved to be a little faster than that, but it’s all about where we are in the season, and I think that’s a good stepping stone for knowing how to race as I go throughout the year…The time was all right, thought I had a pretty good third 50, but for where I’m at in my training cycle, I think it was pretty good.” 

Race Notes: 

  • This gold medal marks Foster’s second individual gold of these Pan American Games. 

Women’s 100m Backstroke 
1 – Josephine Fuller (Richmond, Va./Tennessee Aquatics), 59.67 
2 – Kennedy Noble (Avondale, Ariz./Wolfpack Elite), 59.84 

Fuller on her performance: “I was really happy [with my time]. That’s a best time for me. So proud of me and Kennedy [Noble] going out there tonight - both going out there and we had so much fun in the ready room. I’m just really happy and have so much gratitude for this moment and being a part of Team USA. Kennedy and I really wanted to go one, two so I’m really proud of us.” 

Race Notes: 

  • Fuller set a new personal best with her time of 59.67. 

Men’s 100m Backstroke 
1– Adam Chaney (Mason, Ohio/University of Florida), 54.20 
5 – Christopher O’Connor (North Canton, Ohio/Longhorn Aquatics), 54.61 

Chaney on winning gold: “It’s like the little kid that dreams about this. I’m happy I got to fulfill the dream...It was good, time doesn’t matter, I was just happy I got first!” 

Race Notes: 

  • Chaney’s gold is his first individual medal and second medal of these Pan American Games. 

Women’s 800m Freestyle 
1 – Paige Madden (Mobile, Ala./New York Athletic Club), 8:27.99 
2 – Rachel Stege (Naperville, Ill./Athens Bulldog Swim Club), 8:28.50 

Madden on her performance: “I’m really happy with that. It was a best time. It was an incredible honor to swim against Kristel [Köbrich of Chile]. The crowd was just crazy…My time was great, definitely wanted to be under 8:30. My best time before was 8:32 so a five-second drop was great for me.” 

Stege on her performance: “I was really happy with it. It’s so fun to race with Paige [Madden]. We’re roomies so we’re great friends, and we work really well off each other.” 

Race Notes: 

  • Madden picks up her second gold medal of these Pan American Games. 

  • Madden and Stege both set new personal bests with their performances. 

Men’s 800m Freestyle 
3 – Will Gallant (Canton, Conn./Wolfpack Elite), 7:58.96 
7 – James Plage (Glastonbury, Conn./Wolfpack Elite), 8:10.73 

Gallant on his performance: “I mean it’s my first international race so it’s pretty cool. It’s early in the season so didn’t get much rest, getting back into things, and just kind of went for it and held on as long as I could.” 

Race Notes: 

  • Gallant wins his first international medal during his international debut. 

Mixed 4x100m Medley Relay 
1 – USA, 3:44.71 
Kennedy Noble (Avondale, Ariz./Wolfpack Elite), 59.72 
Jake Foster (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mason Manta Rays/University of Texas), 60.09 
Kelly Pash (Carmel, Ind./Carmel Swim Club/University of Texas), 57.51 
Jonny Kulow (Lander, Wy./Sun Devil Swimming), 47.39 

Foster on the team’s performance: “I feel really good about it. I think we pretty much all had tough doubles today and we pulled it off really well. And the fact that we were able to get the record I think speaks a lot about how we are able to bounce back from other swims.” 

Race Notes: 

  • Jack Aikins, Arsenio Bustos, Olivia Bray and Kayla Wilson will also receive gold medals for their preliminary swims. 

  • Team USA’s time bests the previous Pan American Games record (also set by the United States in 2019) by 3.56 seconds.
