After being announced the winner earlier this year, Desert Aquatics (DSRT) and three other Gold Medal winners were awarded $200 and a celebratory pizza party by the USA Swimming Foundation. Towards the end of September 2022, USA Swimming Foundation Swim-a-Thon grand prize winner DSRT had an unforgettable experience with Olympian freestyler Drew Kibler.

“The event was a roaring success, with Drew’s engagement leaving an indelible mark on the young swimmers,” USA Swimming Team Services Senior Advisor Mitch Gold said.

Starting the unforgettable day, Drew engaged with athletes and coaches in a captivating Q&A session, allowing for real-time conversations and the ability to learn from his experiences as an Olympian and current USA Swimming National Team athlete. Afterward, he spent time signing autographs and connecting with the team.

“The coaches and volunteers were incredibly welcoming, and the swimmers of DSRT were incredible,” said 2022 World Aquatics Championships gold medalist Drew Kibler. “They were not only extremely excited and energetic but also observant and started impactful conversations. It was so fun getting to meet everyone.”

After making successful connections with the team, Kibler personally guided two swim groups – Platinum and Gold, followed by Age Group and Novice – which inspired new and advanced swimmers alike.

“We have never seen the kids so excited and attentive to every word,” DSRT head coach Laura Gonzales said. “We appreciate the prize, especially as a small club. Drew inspired so many of our athletes!”

The day concluded with exhilarating games and relays with the entire club.

“Being able to spend the day with Desert Aquatics was one of my favorite experiences as a National Team athlete,” Kibler said. “Thank you to the USA Swimming Foundation and Desert Aquatics for enabling me to be part of this incredible group. Desert Aquatics showed me how quickly you can grow and improve when you operate like you’re one big family. This team genuinely cares about everyone involved in it and has an incredibly bright future.”

“Drew’s engagement with the swimmers was a highlight of the day, fostering inspiration, motivation, and a deep appreciation for the sport of swimming,” Gold continued. “His willingness to share his experiences and answer questions left a lasting impact on the young athletes of Desert Aquatics.”

More than 250 teams across the country hosted USA Swimming Foundation Swim-a-Thon contests in 2022, raising over $230,000 for the USA Swimming Foundation and over $4.6 million for their causes.
