Women's History Month: Record-Breaking Moments at Olympic Trials

As we continue celebrating Women's History Month, we have the privilege to highlight the talented women who have left an indelible mark on our sport. With the 2024 U.S. Olympic Team Trials just around the corner, let's revisit some of our female athletes' remarkable record-breaking swims at the Olympic Trials over the past two decades.
1. Katie Hoff - 400m Individual Medley (2008): Katie Hoff's record-setting performance in the 400m individual medley at the 2008 Olympic Trials was outstanding. She broke the previous American record and set a new world record with a time of 4:31.12, showcasing her versatility and dominance across disciplines.
2. Natalie Coughlin - 100m Backstroke (2008): With a time of 58.97, Natalie set a new American and world record, setting the stage for her gold medal performance at the Beijing Games.
3. Dara Torres – 50m Freestyle (2008): Dara Torres broke the American record in the 50m freestyle twice at the 2008 Olympic Trials. With a time of 24.38 in semi-finals she became the new American recorder holder. During her finals swim, she lowered the mark to 24.25, setting another American record.
4. Missy Franklin – 100m Backstroke (2012): Missy Franklin was just 17 years old when she broke the American record in the 100m backstroke at the 2012 Olympic Trials with a time of 58.85. She would go on to win four gold medals at the London Olympics and went even faster in the 100m backstroke, setting a new American record of 58.33.
5. Dana Vollmer – 100m Butterfly (2012): Dana Vollmer broke the 100m butterfly American record in semi-finals at the 2012 Olympic Trials with a time of 56.42. This exciting semi-final swim catapulted Vollmer to a victory in the final and secured her spot on the London Olympic Team.
Each of these women went on to earn medals in these events at the Olympic Games, contributing to the United States medal count and adding to their list of accomplishments.
