Saint Petersburg Aquatics Swimmers Hansen, Hehenberger Win Women’s and Men’s 5K Junior National Championships

The 2024 Open Water National and Junior National Championships continued this morning with the 5K Junior National Championships. Teammates Brinkleigh Hansen (Saint Petersburg, Fla./Saint Petersburg Aquatics) and Cobe Hehenberger (Saint Petersburg, Fla./Saint Petersburg Aquatics) took home wins in both the women’s and men’s events.
Women’s 5K – FINAL
1. Brinkleigh Hansen (Saint Petersburg, Fla./Saint Petersburg Aquatics), 1:00.43
2. Alex Siegel (Garden City, N.Y./Long Island Aquatic Club), 1:00.47
3. Zayda Miehl (Salem, Ore./Corvallis Aquatic Team), 1:00.49
Hansen on her race: “I thought the race was really hard but fun. Staying in the pack was really exciting because I had people to push me.”
Men’s 5K – FINAL
1. Cobe Hehenberger (Saint Petersburg, Fla./Saint Petersburg Aquatics), 58:14
2. Nicholas Liberty (Olney, Md./Rockville Montgomery Swim Club), 58:20
3. Griffin Cagle (Charlotte, N.C./SwimMAC Carolina), 59:48
Hehenberger on his race: “The first two laps were nice, and as soon as the third lap started I had to pick it up. That’s when it started to hurt a lot more.”
Competition finishes tomorrow with the women’s and men’s 5K National Championships and 7.5K Junior National Championships. The men’s 5K race begins at 7:30 a.m. ET, followed by the women’s race at 7:35 a.m. ET. The men’s 7.5K race begins at 9:30 a.m. ET, followed by the women’s race at 9:35 a.m. ET.
