Americans Lead Total Medal Count Through Three Days of Competition in Paris
USA Swimming continued to impress on night three of the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, claiming four additional medals. The team opened the night with a silver-bronze finish by Katie Grimes (Las Vegas, Nev./Sandpipers of Nevada) and Emma Weyant (Sarasota, Fla./Gator Swim Club), respectively, in the women’s 400-meter individual medley. In the next event, Luke Hobson (Reno, Nev./Longhorn Aquatics) secured a bronze medal in the men’s 200m freestyle. Later in the session, team Captain Ryan Murphy (Ponte Vedra Beach, Calif./California Aquatics) claimed his seventh Olympic medal (bronze) in the men’s 100m backstroke. Murphy’s third consecutive Olympics with a medal in the event makes him the second individual ever to do so.
USA Swimming leads the total medal table with 11 (2g, 4s, 5b) through three days of competition. Swimmers Regan Smith (Lakeville, Minn./Longhorn Aquatics) and Katharine Berkoff (Missoula, Mont./NC State) advance to tomorrow’s final in the women’s 100m backstroke. Bobby Finke (Clearwater, Fla./Saint Petersburg Aquatics) advances from this morning’s prelims to tomorrow’s final in the men’s 800m freestyle.
Berkoff (Missoula, Mont./NC State) and Luke Whitlock (Noblesville, Ind./Fishers Area Swimming Tigers) made their Olympic debut this morning.

Silver – Katie Grimes (Las Vegas, Nev./Sandpipers of Nevada), 4:33.40
Bronze – Emma Weyant (Sarasota, Fla./Gator Swim Club), 4.34.93
Weyant on her swim: “I’m pretty confident in my training, especially being with the (University of) Florida distance group. We know how to train for the last 50. I’m really fortunate for (coach Anthony) Nesty and all the coaches there for giving me confidence for the back half.”
Men’s 200m Freestyle – FINAL
Bronze – Luke Hobson (Reno, Nev./Longhorn Aquatics), 1:44.79
Hobson on being an Olympic medalist: “It’s amazing. It’s something I’ve always dreamed of, and to have it happen at my first Olympics, it’s a great feeling. I’m over the moon and super happy with it.”

3 – Katharine Berkoff (Missoula, Mont./NC State), 58.27
Men’s 100m Backstroke – FINAL
Bronze – Ryan Murphy (Ponte Vedra Beach, Calif./California Aquatics), 52.39
Murphy on his swim: “That’s a really talented field…getting third behind Thomas (Ceccon) & Jiayu (Xu), they are both really talented guys. They’ve been really good in this sport for a long time, they deal well with pressure. So, me being third in the world behind them, I’m really not disappointed in that.”
Women’s 100m Breaststroke – FINAL
T-4 – Lilly King (Evansville, Ind./Indiana Swim Club), 1:05.60
King on her swim: “It was as close as it could possibly have been. It was really about the touch, and I could have easily been second, and I ended up tying for fourth. It’s just kind of the luck of the draw with this race. Obviously, I’m disappointed, but there is still a lot of meet left and I’m shifting my focus to the 200 (breaststroke) now.
