Americans Battle Currents in Paris 2024 Women’s 10K

Katie Grimes Open Water - 2024 Olympics

The Paris 2024 open water programming began Thursday morning in the Seine River near the Pont Alexandre III bridge with the women’s 10k. Katie Grimes (Las Vegas, Nev./Sandpipers of Nevada) and Mariah Denigan (Walton, Ky./Indiana University) represented the United States, finishing 15th and 16th, respectively. Grimes and Denigan became just the third and fourth Americans to represent the U.S. in the event at the Olympic Games.

Women’s 10K – FINAL

15 – Katie Grimes (Las Vegas, Nev./Sandpipers of Nevada), 2:06:29.6

16 – Mariah Denigan (Walton, Ky./Indiana University), 2:06:42.9

Grimes on the strategy for today’s water conditions: “Coming upstream, nobody wants to be having the current coming straight towards them. It was best to be behind somebody – that is why we were almost in a single-file line coming straight up the wall, because that was the best place to be, having someone break that wave for you. The more people you had in front of you, the easier it was.”

Denigan on her swim: “I wasn’t really happy with the place, but I’m proud of myself for how I finished it. It was definitely the roughest current that I’ve ever experienced and definitely the toughest race that I’ve ever done, so it was a race of experience and that is what shows on the podium. At the end of the day, I’m just proud of how I competed today.”

Racing continues tomorrow with the men’s 10k, where Ivan Puskovitch (West Chester, Pa./The Swim Team) will represent the Americans in his Olympic debut. The race begins at 1:30 a.m. ET and can be streamed on Peacock.
