USA Swimming National Team Athletes Shine on Night Two of TYR Pro Swim Series Westmont

Simone Manuel - 2025 TYR Pro Swim Series Westmont

The crowd erupted for the first event of night two at the TYR Pro Swim Series Westmont, where veteran Olympic gold medalist Simone Manuel (Sugar Land, Texas/Longhorn Aquatics) raced 15-year-old rising star Rylee Erisman (Windermere, Fla./Laker Swim Club) in the women’s 100-meter freestyle. In the end, the two finished a half second apart, with Manuel placing first (53.23) and Erisman close behind (53.83). Later in the session, Erisman swam her second event of the evening, the women’s 50m backstroke (28.42), placing seventh.

National Team athletes continued to impress as the night progressed, with four additional athletes completing doubles over the course of the evening. Shaine Casas (McAllen, Texas/Longhorn Aquatic Club) went 48.31 in the men’s 100m freestyle and 24.23 in the 50m backstroke, claiming first in both events and setting a new TYR Pro Swim Series record in the 50m backstroke. Michael Andrew (Encinitas, Calif./Sun Devil Swimming) placed first in the men’s 100m breaststroke (1:00.85) and second behind Casas in the men’s 50m backstroke (25.10). Regan Smith (Lakeville, Minn./Longhorn Aquatic Club) placed second and fourth, respectively, in the women’s 200m butterfly (2:06.87) and 50m backstroke (27.97). After swimming at Sectionals last week, Teagan O’Dell (Chino Hills, Calif./Mission Viejo Nadadores) placed sixth in the women’s 50m backstroke (28.32) and thirteenth in the women’s 100m freestyle (56.38).

Fellow National team athletes Kate Douglass (Penham, N.Y./New York Athletic Club) and Trenton Julian (Glendale, Calif./Mission Viejo Nadadores) placed first in their respective events, Douglass winning the women's 100m breaststroke in 1:06.51, and Julian taking the men's 200m butterfly in 1:56.02.

Women’s 100m Freestyle – FINAL

1 – Simone Manuel (Sugar Land, Texas/Longhorn Aquatics), 53.23

2 – Rylee Erisman (Windermere, Fla./Laker Swim Club), 53.83

3 – Meg Harris (AUS), 54.31

Manuel on having fun this year: “A lot of it is just enjoying the process of being healthy and improving each and every day. It’s been a tough journey, so it’s been nice to start from scratch and continue to set these standards and goals for myself.”

Manuel’s advice to young swimmers: “The biggest lesson I have learned through swimming and the success and failures that I have experienced is to use those moments to propel yourself forward.”

Men’s 100m Freestyle – FINAL

1 – Shaine Casas (McAllen, Texas/Longhorn Aquatic Club), 48.31

2 – Grant House (Maineville, Ohio/Sun Devil Aquatics), 48.50

3 – Mikel Schreuders (ARU), 48.65

Women’s 100m Breaststroke – FINAL

1 – Kate Douglass (Penham, N.Y./New York Athletic Club), 1:06.51

2 – Lilly King (Evansville, Ind./Indiana Swim Club), 1:07.13

3 – Anita Bottazzo (ITA), 1:07.32

Douglass on her long course meter strategy: “My strategy was just to be out faster and close faster than this morning. I haven’t trained long course yet this year, so I didn’t really know how to swim this race, so I just tried to improve upon this morning.”

Men’s 100m Breaststroke – FINAL

1 – Michael Andrew (Encinitas, Calif./Sun Devil Swimming), 1:00.85

2 – AJ Pouch (Henderson, Nev./Pinnacle Racing), 1:01.24

3 – Garrett Clasen (Aurora, Ill./FMC Aquatic), 1:01.58

Andrew on his training and transition to Sun Devil Swimming: “The first couple of weeks were incredibly challenging; I think just mentally, it was a new stimulus. There are still a lot of questions I had to answer for myself, but it was great. I was met with open arms and have a great community with the guys. It’s a really fun atmosphere and a very competitive one. If you show up feeling like garbage, you have no choice but to get up and race unless you want to take an ‘L’, and the guys will let you know if you lost. It’s been really good for me.”

Women’s 50m Backstroke – FINAL

1 – Kylie Masse (CAN), 27.42

2 – Katharine Berkoff (Missoula, Mont./Wolfpack Elite), 27.63

3 – Ingrid Wilm (CAN), 27.67

Men’s 50m Backstroke – FINAL

1 – Shaine Casas (McAllen, Texas/Longhorn Aquatic Club), 24.23*

2 – Michael Andrew (Encinitas, Calif./Sun Devil Swimming), 25.10

3 – Tommy Janton (Kennett Square, Pa./Unattached), 25.25

*TYR Pro Swim Series record

Andrew on his double: “I feel good. The 50 back definitely hurt a lot more than the 100 breast; it was just pure pain in the quads. It’s a fun final, especially Westmont. This year, it feels like there’s a lot of space to do a lot of races. It’s nice to get up, especially in a heat with swimmers like Shaine (Casas), and race with the buddies. It’s a fun start to the meet, and tomorrow I have two 50’s so that’s always a good time. Then I’ll save it for that 200 IM on the last day.”

Women’s 200m Butterfly – FINAL

1 – Summer McIntosh (CAN), 2:04.00*

2 – Regan Smith (Lakeville, Minn./Longhorn Aquatic Club), 2:06.87

3 – Rachel Klinker (Lexington, K.Y./California Aquatics), 2:10.73

*TYR Pro Swim Series record

Men’s 200m Butterfly – FINAL

1 – Trenton Julian (Glendale, Calif./Mission Viejo Nadadores), 1:56.02

2 – Jack Dahlgren (Victoria, Minn./Aquajets Swim Team), 1:57.35

3 – Patrick Branon (Lutherville Timonium, M.D./North Baltimore Aquatic Club), 1:59.07

Julian on his strategy: “I think a lot of what I’ve been working on this year is not worrying about how I feel or the times so much. As far as strategy, just keeping that first 50 nice and long, but not holding myself back. Really working on that tempo and rhythm for the middle hundred. Then on the last 50, just giving all that I have without really working it too hard the first 15 so I can let my body adjust to that speed. I think I handled and executed that pretty well. Obviously, the race is always going to hurt, that’s just how that race is. I don’t expect any different. If I do, then I’m swimming it wrong. Overall, the execution was good and I’m happy with the race.”

Women’s 400m Freestyle – FINAL

1 – Mary-Sophie Harvey (CAN), 4:08.67

2 – Gabriele Roncatto Goncalves (BRA), 4:09.01

3 – Maria Fernanda Costa (BRA), 4:11.67

Men’s 400m Freestyle – FINAL

1 – Samuel Short (AUS), 3:44.83

2 – Carson Foster (Cincinnati, Ohio/Longhorn Aquatic Club), 3:46.42

3 – Guilherme Costa (BRA), 3:46.74
