Diaz on becoming the women’s 5k National Junior champion: “It was very rough the first length, then it slowly got better as the laps went on.”
On her race strategy: “On the first lap, I just wanted to be in the front pack and get some draft off of people and be relaxed, not go all out. In the second lap, I started to pick up my pace, and in that last lap, I made some moves on my competition.”
Reflecting on her race: “It was super hard the first lap with everybody going all at once, during the second and third lap I got into a pace and then went all out. I wanted to get in the front pack and draft with everyone and then slowly started moving up places, then I started passing people."
Competition concludes tomorrow with the 5K National Championship and 7.5K Junior National Championship. The men’s 5K race begins at 8:30 a.m. ET, followed by the women’s race at 8:35 a.m. ET. The men’s 7.5K race begins at 10:00 a.m. ET, followed by the women’s race at 10:05 a.m. ET. Live streams of all races are available on the USA Swimming Network.
